Class Description

For newcomers to our program plus returning students from our Level I or Level II Writing classes along with our Speech and Debate class. This is an opportunity for students at the high end of middle school and the lower end of high school to benefit from how we will conduct our close reading of novels and plays that they will certainly be assigned to do throughout high school. We will cover selected classics from the following categories: Shakespeare plays, Dystopian Novels, American and British Literature, plus Mythology. That means students will be studying literature from a potential list of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, or Macbeth, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, or Lord of the Flies, The Odyssey, Oedipus, or Antigone, plus such classics as The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Crucible – all books and plays that are a part of any area high school reading curriculum. Along with our study of such literature, we will teach students all of our tips and techniques how to handle Socratic Seminar group discussions that have become a major part of area high school English classes, including how Dougherty High uses such discussions as its final semester exams. Students who take this class will be totally prepared to handle those challenges.
