Class Description

* First few weeks of class teaching fundamentals for new students on how to find themes in stories, construct high school level thesis statements, organize literary analysis essays, and analyze quotations, while reviewing those fundamentals for returning students
* Continued emphasis on techniques for reading and writing all phases high school level essays
* An expanded set of specific lessons on how to handle each of the following essay modes: Narrative, Descriptive, Illustrative, Definition, Process Analysis, Classification, Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect
* New emphasis on learning to read and write about Shakespearean poetry and drama
* More emphasis on TIQA essays that are taught in local public schools
* Incorporate into lessons series of short stories and mythology
* Offer students opportunities to submit entries for writing contests
* Student writing will be more habitually turned in for series of grades
* Weekly email progress reports with homework will continue
* Fishbowl oral component will be stressed
* Introduce non-fiction reading into curriculum
* Show how literature reading/analysis methods can also work with history classes
* Emphasis on learning current events and how to apply them to argumentative essays
